Newcastle United news: ‘Sensational’ Allan Saint-Maximin claim issued as Mills ‘wowed’ by Instagram reveal

Allan Saint-Maximin will never be a consistent “7/10” player but still has a major role to play for Newcastle United, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and England full-back claimed that “sensational” Saint-Maximin can “wow” fans but will put in the occasional “5/10” performance.

The 25-year-old has failed to refind his best form in recent weeks after suffering with injury and illness.

He hit back at his critics on Instagram on Saturday (19 March) claiming they need to “restore their memory”.

The i reported on Monday (21 March), the Frenchman is a “huge” part of Eddie Howe’s plans and is also a big favourite of the new ownership group.

“He’s that sort of player who is going to be 9.5/10 or 5/10, 6/10,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s never going to give you that level of performance where you think he’s a 7/10 player week in, week out. It’s not him, that’s not how he plays.

“He picks the ball up, runs with the ball, makes things happen and is exciting. All those types of things.

“One week you will think ‘Wow, sensational’ but then he might be quiet for two or three games.

“The way that wingers play, he’ll be in and out of games. It’s hard to be on the ball all the time when you’re that type of player.”

Saint-Maximin has 12 goals and 14 assists in 84 games across all competitions for Newcastle.

He is under contract at St. James’ Park until the summer of 2026 after penning a long-term deal back in October 2020.
