Newcastle United news: This is when Allan Saint-Maximin talks may begin after update – pundit

Newcastle United could wait until next summer before opening contract talks with Allan Saint-Maximin, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old needs to improve his output before he is given a new and improved deal.

The Daily Mail (25 May) claim the winger’s representatives floated the idea of a wage increase earlier this year and that the proposal is likely to be revisited in the near future.

Saint-Maximin signed his current terms, which run until 2026, in 2020.

However, the French star is reportedly seeking parity with the top earners at St James’ Park.

Whelan suggested the mercurial forward needs to prove himself during the 2022/23 campaign before talks over a new deal take place.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think you just leave him as it is. It’s entirely up to him. I know there’s player power etcetera but when you’ve got a contract, you’ve got a contract.

“Now they’ve got their safety in the Premier League for next year, they’re looking to rebuild again. You look at the progress they’ve already made, why would you not want to stay in behind that?

“Then you get the contract that you deserve when your ratio is up with your assists and goals and you’re higher in the league.

“The financial outcome will come to you. Give him another season. Let’s see his commitment because it is about the commitment. That’s what you want. You want a player to be committed. He’s under contract, why would you not want to be committed?

“You’ve seen the way they finished the season, the style of play is more attractive to watch. The players they could possibly bring into the club is only going to enhance that and make the football more enjoyable.”
