Newcastle United owners have made final signing after Sven Botman news – pundit

The Newcastle United ownership will no longer have a say in recruitment following the arrival of Sven Botman.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the North East giant’s latest signing.

Tuesday (28 June) Newcastle United announced they had agreed a deal in principle for the signing of Sven Botman, 22, in a deal Sky Sports claim is worth £35million.

The defender has been a key Magpies target since the Saudi-led takeover was completed in October 2021.

He joins Matt Targett and Nick Pope as the newest recruits on Tyneside ahead of the 2022-23 season.

McLeish expects Newcastle’s owners will now have less of a say in the recruitment of players following Dan Ashworth’s arrival at the club.

“It’s a great signing the owners wanted for a long time. The owners now have to leave the acquisition of players to the recruitment team,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“They gave the trust to the new manager and he then went on a long spell of great results. That culminated with keeping Newcastle in the division.

“If they want to keep rising, Dan Ashworth is a great acquisition. He knows his onions. Going forward, the board have to back him when he decides Newcastle should sign a player.

Botman made 32 appearances for Lille in all competitions during the 2021-22 season.

He also struggled with injuries to his groin and hamstring, causing him to miss 14 games across the campaign.

In other news, Newcastle United’s owners have been hailed for ‘brilliant’ £82m development as deal agreed.
