Credit to Crystal Palace, they nearly completely nullified Shelvey’s threat from the midfield.
Fans saw sides carry out a similar tactic in the Championship, where they just gave the midfielder no time or space to impact the game on the ball, and the Eagles did the same again.
As a result it was a disappointing outing for Shelvey, offering very little in terms of attacking threat, although he was constantly looking for an outlet for his team mates.
Newcastle have got to find a way to bring him into matches when he is being shut out by the opposition, whether moving him into another position or working the ball quicker through the midfield.
