Newcastle United: Pundit can’t believe Matt Targett signing – ‘that doesn’t happen’
Newcastle United have sealed a “bargain” after the permanent signing of Matt Targett was confirmed.
That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 26-year-old’s permanent transfer.
On Wednesday (8 June) Targett was announced as Newcastle’s first signing of the summer.
After the left-back joined the Magpies in January 2021, he played every single minute until the end of the season apart from the game against his parent club on 13 February.
His arrival permanently fills the Magpies’ problem position of left-back, a position which Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett have struggled to make their own in recent seasons.
Kenny insists the signing of a Premier League proven star for £12million is something that simply doesn’t happen.
“It’s a no brainer,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“He had a good spell there and £12million in this day and age is not a lot of money, is it?
“It gets the ball rolling on the summer business for Newcastle which is important.
“He did well when he was there and I think it’s a bargain if I’m honest.
“£12million for someone with over 100 Premier League appearances, that doesn’t happen.”

Targett made 16 appearances for Newcastle during the 2021-22 season.
He failed to score or assist but bolstered a backline that kept seven clean sheets after the turn of the year.
In other news, Newcastle United have been told to re-sign Georginio Wijnaldum as transfer decision close.
