‘Liverpool was the opposite’ – Newcastle star opens up about hit-and-miss start

By Russell Edge

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has stated that the club should be satisfied with their start to the season.

It has been a hit-and-miss first seven games for the Magpies so far, with three successive wins over West Ham, Swansea and Stoke marred by defeats to Tottenham, Huddersfield and Brighton.

They have also seen disciplinary issues rear their head, with both Jonjo Shelvey and Aleksandar Mitrovic receiving three match bans for incidents against Spurs and the Hammers respectively.

The club’s last match saw them secure a hard fought 1-1 draw with Liverpool at St James’ Park, leaving them sitting in ninth place with ten points ahead of the current international break.

Now Elliot, who has been an ever present for the Magpies in the league this season, says that the club’s position is proof that their game plan is working, even if the results do not always follow the performances.

The 31-year-old told the Chronicle: “After Tottenham it was disappointing – our game plan was fine but obviously with the circumstances and the sending off did not allow us to capitalise on that.

“Although, we didn’t play great against Brighton we did create a lot of chances. Liverpool was the opposite.

“We did capitalise on the game plan against Liverpool after coming back from behind. It was fortuitous but it was a great ball from Jonjo Shelvey. We got the luck we deserve.”

Following Tim Krul’s departure over the summer, Elliot became the club’s current longest serving player, having joined from Charlton back in 2011.

He recovered from a major injury lay off suffered while playing for the Republic of Ireland to reclaim his first team spot from Karl Darlow, and has made 59 appearances for the club, seven of which have come this season.
