Newcastle United news: Injury guru names Federico Fernandez comeback date after ‘significant’ news

Federico Fernandez could return for Newcastle United within the next three weeks.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Fernandez, 32, has been absent for the Magpies with a hamstring complaint since the beginning of December.

As quoted by Chronicle Live last Friday (28 January), Eddie Howe revealed Fernandez is “running with physios on the grass, but he’s not training”.

Dinnery suggests that the Argentine centre-back will make his comeback in “mid to late February”.

“There is a wider context when it comes to a return to play,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The arrival of Dan Burn eases the pressure with regards to bringing him back.

“He always seemed to be on the fringes of the starting XI anyway. Lascelles and Schar are the main central pairing, as it was.

He is still with the physio department. There will be a transition period where he does part individual work and part with the team. That’s significant.

“Realistically, we’re looking at mid to late February with that one. Two or three weeks is more than realistic.

“Newcastle are now looking quite well-stocked in that backline. So I don’t think there’s any need to take any particular risks.”

Fernandez has struggled for game time in 2021-22, making just seven league appearances all season.

Newcastle face Everton in their first match after the winter break next Tuesday (8 February).
