Medical expert: Ryan Fraser injury may be worse than thought amid ‘conflicting’ Newcastle news

Ryan Fraser’s hamstring injury may be worst than initially thought after “conflicting” assessments at Newcastle United.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Fraser, 28, has not featured since he was forced off in the Magpies’ 1-0 win over Wolves earlier this month (8 April).

Newcastle Eddie Howe with his hand over his mouth

As quoted by Chronicle Live last Friday, manager Eddie Howe claimed that scans on the winger’s thigh had revealed only a “very small problem”.

But, as relayed by the same outlet on Tuesday (19 April), Howe confirmed that Newcastle are now seeking a third opinion after two conflicting scans.

The Scottish winger’s setback could potentially see him sidelined for longer than the two weeks that were originally forecast, claims Dinnery.

“As far as we were aware, it was a minor issue,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“However, there has been conflicting insight from two different assessments.

“That means he is going to go back for further imaging to try and find out.

“The slight concern is that what we initially thoughts was a small problem could turn out to be something a little more serious.

“It will be hard to get a good understanding until we get that second MRI scan. It could be something that needs to be addressed.”

Fraser’s 28 appearances this season have yielded two goals and three assists.

Newcastle are currently 11th in the Premier League and face Norwich City tomorrow (23 April).
