Medical expert names Dummett comeback date amid ‘massive’ Newcastle verdict

Paul Dummett could return to action for Newcastle United towards the end of January.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Dummet has not been involved for the Magpies since he suffered a calf injury in pre-season.

The 30-year-old left-back was originally slated to return in September until a setback derailed his progress.

Per Chronicle Live last Thursday, Eddie Howe revealed: “I [have] loved working with him, but I can’t put a timescale on when he could come back.”

Dinnery predicts that the Newcastle academy product could return around the time of the winter break.

“He has been a massive miss,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“There have been several setbacks along the way. This latest bout has put him out for about four months. So no chances will be taken and no corners cut.

“Ordinarily, it wouldn’t be a concern at left-back or centrally where he has played in the past. You have Manquillo, Ritchie, Lewis.

“However, all those players are either injured or out with Covid. But I still think Dummett is a while away from competing at the highest level.

“For me, I would think it would be towards mid to late January.

“He needs to get through a couple of bounce games, a couple of games for the development side without a reaction first.”

Newcastle currently have a 12-man casualty list and are second from bottom in the Premier League.

They are due to play Southampton on Sunday (2 January) if Covid restrictions allow.
