Newcastle news: Medical expert reveals Kieran Trippier return date as ‘massive bonus’ explained

Kieran Trippier is still set to return to action in late April – anything else would be a “massive bonus” for Newcastle United.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Trippier, who became the first arrival of the PIF era when he signed from Atletico Madrid in January, has not played since 13 March.

The 31-year-old right-back is sidelined with a metatarsal injury and is currently wearing a protective boot.

But quoted by club media last Tuesday (22 March), Eddie Howe revealed that Trippier “could be back in action hopefully pretty soon.”

Dinnery, however, suggests that the former Tottenham man’s return-to-play target will not have shifted a great deal from early expectations.

“From day one, I thought he’d be targeting the end of April,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“That would be a smooth recovery. It’s a bone injury and because of that, typically we’re looking at eight to 10 weeks.

“We have seen some players experience a little bit of discomfort because of where the fracture is and how it has been fixed.

“Maybe that needs to be addressed. But I think the end of April is a realistic target and anything before then would be a massive bonus.”

Trippier has scored twice in five appearances since his arrival at St James’ Park.

Newcastle, who are 14th in the Premier League, are in action at Tottenham on Sunday (3 April).
