Newcastle United summer signing plan revealed amid ‘big’ claim – pundit
Frank McAvennie has insisted Newcastle United won’t sign expensive players for the sake of it.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted players will “get a shock” if they go to Newcastle just for the money.
According to The Telegraph (23 May), the Magpies are planning to spend big this summer after confirming their spot in the Champions League but wage restrictions are likely to hinder Eddie Howe’s plans to sign “elite” players.
The implications of Financial Fair Play will also be a factor in Howe’s budget for next season.
The north east club were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in 2020 and since then have spent big in transfer windows as the club rocketed to the top end of the league table this season and secured a Champions League spot.
When asked if players joining Newcastle will be expecting big wages given the club’s trajectory, McAvennie told Football Insider: “People will get a shock if they go to Newcastle just for the money because the fans will let them know.
“The more they play in the Champions League the more they can afford to spend big money.
“Eddie Howe is good at picking players and taking them to the top of their game, he is very good at that.

“He does not take the finished article and that is why he is getting players at a good price and I do not see that changing.
“They do not want to sign players that are just coming for a pay day, they want players that are hungry and willing to put a shift in.”
