On the brink: Three Newcastle players fighting for their future at the club
Jacob Murphy
It is fair to say that Benitez did pretty well in the summer transfer market, with most of his signings having had a meaningful impact on the club’s fortunes this season.
Unfortunately for Jacob Murphy, he is the exception.
The form of Christian Atsu and Matt Ritchie on the flanks have limited his game time, and he has failed to impress when given the chance.
Against Swansea, his only league start, he looked bereft of ideas and lacked the physicality to compete against top flight defenders.
He was the Magpies’ big money signing but he is yet to live up to his price tag, and unless he starts to demonstrate some form, he could be facing a troubling time over January.
The most likely option would be that Benitez sources a loan move for the youngster, to give him the required game time and build his ability until it is at the required level.
He is a work in progress, but what Newcastle need right now is the finished article.
In other Newcastle United news, Michael Owen has admitted his surprise as he made his prediction for the Magpies’ clash against Southampton.
