Newcastle United tipped to complete five new signings after £60m update – pundit

Noel Whelan has tipped Newcastle United to make as many as five new signings this summer despite a reportedly limited transfer budget.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Magpies needs to offload some of the current squad to bring in “top-quality” additions.

As reported by the Telegraph on Wednesday (23 March), Newcastle are targeting three to four signings with a budget of around £60million available to Eddie Howe.

The Newcastle boss could top up his transfer kitty through player sales.

Whelan suggested Newcastle could bring in around five new faces in a minor overhaul of the squad.

Asked if three or four signings would be enough, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “If they can keep players fit, then it might be enough.

“The style of play has got better. The infrastructure of how he’s putting his philosophy out there for the team is proving dividends. They’ve reacted and the way they’ve been playing has been successful.

“Four players? He’s got a couple of good signings in already, Saint-Maximin up front, Wilson to come back. I still feel he needs another centre-half, even those he’s brought one in, Dan Burn.

“If they can get some out the door and bring some in, four or five, I think it probably would be enough for Eddie Howe to work with.

“They’ve got to be some good signings though. There’s got to be longevity in the signings. Players that give them that stability for three or four season with top-quality players.”

Newcastle signed Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn permanently in January.

They also brought Matt Targett in on loan from Aston Villa.
