Kieran Maguire tips ‘radically different’ Newcastle summer signings plan with ‘high’ fees on the cards

Newcastle United will chase “younger” and more “high-profile” transfer targets this summer if they avoid relegation.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the new-money Magpies’ transfer strategy.

Kieran Trippier, 31, became the first signing of the new Newcastle era when he joined from Atletico Madrid for £12million on 7 January.

Newcastle

The right-back was followed to St James’ Park by striker Chris Wood, 30, who signed from Burnley in a £25million deal last Thursday (13 January).

And this site revealed on Friday (21 January) that Newcastle have seen a £5m-plus bid for 29-year-old attacker Jesse Lingard knocked back by Man United.

The Dail Mail reported the previous Friday (14 January) that Trippier was handed a £100,000-a-week contract, while Wood will take home £80,000 per week.

It is claimed that this puts the new boys at the top end of Newcastle’s pay scale without shattering their wage structure.

But Maguire predicts more spectacular big-money signings when the window opens in June if Eddie Howe’s side can beat the drop.

“It’s a rational policy to take at the moment given the nature of the signings,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“They aren’t young players. If Newcastle avoid relegation, when they start to recruit this summer, they will be looking for younger players.

“They will be looking for younger players, more high-profile players, players on higher transfer fees. It will look radically different, I expect.

“These wages are very good wages for the players considering the transfer fees.

“For a £20m signing, you’d usually be looking around the £50,000-a-week mark.”

Man United

Newcastle are 19th in the league table.

They face Leeds United in a vital clash at Elland Road tomorrow (22 January).
