Newcastle United tipped to pull off big-name signing thanks to Bruno Guimaraes – pundit

Noel Whelan has insisted Newcastle United could bring in some big-name signings this summer thanks to Bruno Guimaraes.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker insisted the 24-year-old would be a big lure for proven talent to join the Magpies.

Speaking to the media earlier this month (15 April), Eddie Howe insisted this summer “will not be the revolution everyone thinks it will be” due to “financial restrictions”.

The Athletic (30 March) claim Newcastle’s top priority is a new striker with four to six signings, primarily down the spine of the side, targeted.

They quote a recruitment source as saying the Magpies have “raised the level of player they are after”.

Whelan insisted playing alongside the likes of Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin would prove a big lure for potential new signings.

Asked if he thought big-name players would want to join Newcastle because of Guimaraes, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, absolutely.

Bruno is of these players that they’re building around. That’s for sure. He’s got a good long stint at Newcastle. They’ll be making sure that they surround him with better players as well for next season.

“He is a Brazil international. We’ve already seen the impact he has had at Newcastle. Also, the impact that Eddie Howe’s having on the team?

“You’d be more sceptical if they were going into the Championship. Now they’re staying in the Premier League, playing the football, having the success they’re getting at the minute means a better environment.

“You can see that. Winning breeds winning, they’ve got a great manager, he looks like he’s hands-on and a good man-manager as well. That makes a difference.

“But when you’ve got players with the quality of a Brazil international, (Allan) Saint-Maximin, it attracts players.

“They want to be there because of the quality you’re going to be mixing yourself with on a Saturday afternoon.”
