Kieran Maguire tips Newcastle to spend ’10s of millions’ with ‘zero worries’ for FFP

Newcastle United can spend “10s of millions” on a brand new training facility without having to worry about financial fair play.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ plans to transform their infrastructure.

Newcastle supremo Mehrdad Ghodoussi told The Athletic last Saturday (26 February) that “we’re currently looking at sites” for a new training base.

Ghodoussi took the reins alongside Amanda Staveley following PIF’s £305million takeover in October last year.

The premiership of previous owner Mike Ashely was characterised by severe underspending at Darsley Park and in infrastructure in general.

Maguire claims that this is one area the new-money Tyneside giants can push the boat out with being shackled by FFP.

“We are talking 10s of millions,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Mike Ashley was legendarily parsimonious when it came to infrastructure spend.

“It has meant Newcastle have fallen behind when it comes to infrastructure. That impact can be seen in a number of ways.

“You want to be training in weather-proof facilities that are identical to the conditions at St James’ Park.

“I think they are exactly right to do this. It might not be glamorous and you might not see the dividend for a few years, but you will eventually.

“They have zero worries for financial fair play in this area, so expect significant investment.”

Ghodoussi, who was interviewed alongside fellow Magpies co-owner Amanda Staveley, also outlined plans to expand St James Park.

Newcastle are currently 14th in the Premier League and on a seven-match undefeated run.
