Newcastle United to announce Dougie Freedman arrival within days – sources

Newcastle United are closing in on a full agreement with Crystal Palace for sporting director Dougie Freedman, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed last week (7 May) that Palace recruitment chief Freedman is a part of the Magpies’ shortlist to replace Man United-bound Dan Ashworth.

It is believed a full agreement is now drawing closer as the summer window approaches.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that there is “confidence” at St James’ Park that Freedman’s appointment will be finalised quickly.

Sources say official news on the 49-year-old joining Newcastle could come soon after the end of the 2023-24 campaign – which is just days away.

Freedman has impressed the Tyneside club with his ability to buy and develop top young talent after taking the Palace sporting director role in 2017.

Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi, Joachim Andersen and Cheick Doucoure are among the high-profile stars to arrive at Selhurst Park during his reign.

He was also key in the appointment of Oliver Glasner, who has proved a shrewd pick for Palace since he succeeded Roy Hodgson in February.

Freedman was linked with a potential move to Man United under the new Sir Jim Ratcliffe regime earlier this season, but a move did not materialise.
