Finance guru: Newcastle United working on ‘£80m’ deal amid behind-the-scenes latest

Newcastle United have aspirations to match the “£80million” kit deals that some members of the so-called ‘Big Six’ have been able to negotiate.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ current deal with Castore.

Newcastle signed with Castore ahead of 2021-22 in a deal worth a reported £15m over its three-season lifespan.

As relayed by the BBC on Tuesday (26 July), many Premier League kit manufacturers have been hit by supply chain issues behind the scenes.

This has led to delays in supporters receiving orders or, in the experience of many Newcastle fans, quality control issues on Castore merchandise.

Plumley claims that the Tynesiders could soon look to upgrade their deal with Castore in any case.

“It is a challenge for the clubs,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“There is a global issue at the moment which is outside the clubs’ control but when there are individual issues it does become problematic.

“For Newcastle, I think you have to look where they see themselves in the future. That deal is set to expire in 2024.

“It’s the ninth highest in the league at the moment at about £5m per year, but that is well below the ‘Big Six’ who are pulling in £30m to £80m.

“There is a renegotiation tobe had because Newcastle will have aspirations of getting closer to the ‘Big Six’ given what’s happened in recent months.

“So, yes, for now, this is problematic but you’d imagine that there might be a change in this space for Newcastle in a few years.”
