Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United to strike ‘far more lucrative deal’ after U-turn

Newcastle United could strike a far more lucrative deal after their contract with Fun88 expires at the end of 2022-23.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the online bookmaker’s continued presence on the front of the Magpies’ shirts.

Per iNews on 8 May, Newcastle had cut short their deal long-standing deal with Fun88.

But the firm’s branding features on Newcastle’s shirts for the 2022-23 campaign, as confirmed when the Tynesiders launched their third kit on Tuesday (28 June).

Maguire explains that Newcastle may have pulled a U-turn in the hope that a successful 2022-23 campaign will leave them in a stronger negotiating position to seal a new deal.

“If we take a look at this from a strategic perspective, a successful season in 2022-23 will allow them to qualify for Europe in 2023-24,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“That would then actually allow them to negotiate a far more lucrative deal. It’s perhaps a small-term pain, long-term gain strategy with respect to this.

“They might not be maximising revenues over the course of the next year but it will put them in a stronger position to negotiate next time. It will also put them in a stronger position to get deals by the fair value panel.”

Premier League clubs are now required to present all commercial deals to a fair value panel in order to wheedle out artificially inflated sponsorship arrangements.

Newcastle’s commercial income totalled £18million in 2020-21, the last financial year on record.
