Newcastle United told to complete Harvey Barnes signing after £50m news – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Newcastle should not be put off by Harvey Barnes’ potential £50million price tag this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed a “many big clubs” will also be monitoring the 24-year-old’s future.

According to The Sun (23 July), Newcastle are targeting a move for Barnes this summer – but Leicester are demanding a fee of £50million for his services.

The one-time England international, who is under contract until June 2025 at the King Power Stadium, notched 11 goals and 14 assists in 47 outings last term.

The versatile attacker can play on the left and right, as well as in an attacking midfield berth.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (6 July) that Newcastle have submitted a £35million bid for Everton sensation Anthony Gordon – as they target a new wide man this summer.

Whelan hailed Barnes’ end product and insisted the Magpies faithful would enjoy having him at St James’ Park.

“He’s probably admired by many big clubs,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He has got the ability to score and create by using his real pace and power. But the main thing for him is his end product.

“£50million for what he has done in his career is not a bad bit of business, considering you are still going to get the best years out of him.

“When you’re looking to rebuild, these are the sorts of players you want.

They know the Premier League, they’re invested in the Premier League – and they know how to work hard and play the game properly.

“Barnes is someone the Newcastle fans would enjoy watching week-in, week-out.”
