Newcastle United told to forget Dean Henderson and sign ‘incredible’ 30-year-old instead – expert

Newcastle United should target Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope if Eddie Howe wants a new number one, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England number one, who worked with Pope at Turf Moor, told Football Insider that the 30-year-old is heading for the exit doors this summer.

According to The Daily Star (16 April), Man United have set a £40million price tag on Dean Henderson amid interest from the Magpies.

Newcastle Eddie Howe with his hand over his mouth

Eddie Howe’s side failed in a bid to sign the England international in the January window despite his number two status at Old Trafford.

Robinson believes Pope would be better option for Newcastle.

“If Burnley go down, Nick Pope will not be there next year,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“I would be very surprised if he is there even if Burnley stay up. He is a top-class goalkeeper.

“I have seen him develop and mature and become an England international. He was raw when he first came to Burnley. Billy Mercer did a brilliant job with him.

“His performance against West Ham was incredible. If Newcastle do want a new number one he has to be high up the list. I’m sure a lot of Premier League clubs are interested in him.”

Pope’s contract at Turf Moor is set to expire at the end of June 2023.

He has kept seven clean sheets in 29 appearances this season.
