Newcastle United told to U-turn after Kepa Arrizabalaga transfer report – pundit

Paul Robinson has urged Newcastle United not to pursue the signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and England number one insisted the 27-year-old is no better than current first choice Martin Dubravka.

According to the Daily Mail (21 March), the Magpies have draw up a shortlist of goalkeeper’s as they look to increase competition for key positions in the squad.

Kepa, Man United’s Dean Henderson, Arsenal’s Bernd Leno and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone are said to feature on the list.

Johnstone aside, the goalkeepers aforementioned are all second choice at their current clubs.

When asked by Football Insider if Kepa would be a welcome addition at St. James’ Park, Robinson said:

“If you are going to spend big-money on a new number one goalkeeper you have to get considerably better than what you already have.

“I don’t think Kepa is better than Dubravka. I like Dubravka. He is strong, commanding and makes big saves. I believe he is a top-class goalkeeper. If you have Kepa and Dubravka, for me, Dubravka plays.

“If Newcastle want to strengthen in the goalkeeping department they should look elsewhere I think. Most clubs like to carry two number one calibre goalkeepers now so I understand their thinking. But I don’t think Kepa should replace Dubravka.”

Kepa has kept eight clean sheets in 15 appearances across all competitions this season.

His contract expires in the summer of 2025.
