Newcastle United told to U-turn on striker plan after journalist’s transfer update – pundit
Paul Robinson has urged Newcastle United to sign another recognised striker before the transfer window shuts.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed Eddie Howe needs two “high quality strikers” at his disposal given potential injuries and the introduction of five substitutes.
The Magpies missed out on signing Hugo Ekitike this summer, the forward instead moving to Paris Saint-Germain.
According to the Daily Mail‘s Craig Hope (17 July), Howe could gamble on Callum Wilson’s fitness and go into next season with the Englishman as his only central striker.
Wilson missed the majority of the 2021-22 campaign with muscle injuries.
When asked by Football Insider if signing another centre-forward was a must for Newcastle this summer, Robinson said: “100 per cent.
“They have not got enough without signing another striker. They have to get another.
“Wilson is a brilliant striker and he proved his worth in the game against Arsenal at the end of the season. I thought he was outstanding on that occasion.
“I think they have to go and get another striker though. They cannot risk his injury record. The games comes thick and fast.

“It is more of a squad game than ever now so they need more than one top striker. It would be very naive of them to go into next season with just one.
“Eddie Howe needs two high quality strikers, especially when you factor in that there will be five subs allowed.”
