Newcastle United transfer news: Pundit baffled by ‘strange’ Ben Godfrey news

Newcastle should be “aiming higher” than reported target Ben Godfrey this summer, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old has had an “inconsistent” season for Everton.

According to the Mirror (19 March), Newcastle are set to resurrect a move for Godfrey in the summer after failing to land the Toffees man in January.

The report claims Magpies boss Eddie Howe is a “big fan” of the former Norwich defender.

Godfrey, who has two caps for England, has made 23 appearances across all competitions this season.

Whelan urged Newcastle to “excite the fans” with a bigger-name signing this summer.

“It’s not been a great season for him, he’s been so inconsistent,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“That Everton side is shipping a lot of goals.

“It’s a strange route to be looking down for Newcastle. Especially when you consider that they’ve got almost unlimited funds at their disposal.

“You’d think that they’d go for a bigger name, more experience, international players – that’s what the fans want to see.

“I’m not sure they’d be that excited by Godfrey after watching the season he’s had – and considering the bigger names they didn’t quite manage to get in January.

“I would like to think that if Newcastle stayed in the Premier League they’d be aiming higher than Godfrey. I’d like to see them excite the fans with a little bit more.”
