Newcastle United transfer news: Pundit issues ‘exciting’ verdict after £23m Joe Gomez update
Newcastle should be looking to sign reported target Joe Gomez this summer instead of Ben Godfrey, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old Liverpool star would be a “really good option” for Eddie Howe’s side.
According to the Daily Express (16 March), Newcastle, Fulham, West Ham, and Tottenham are all chasing Gomez – who is apparently valued at £23million by the Anfield side.
Meanwhile, according to the Mirror (19 March), the Tyneside club are set to resurrect a move for Godfrey in the summer after failing to land the Everton man in January.
Whelan highlighted the Liverpool star’s versatility – with the 11-cap England star having played five times at right-back this term.
When asked if Gomez would be a better option than Godfrey, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Oh god, yeah – absolutely.
“He’s more proven at the top level, he’s had more international recognition – and he’s a player well worth around that £25million mark.
“Yes, he’s had his injury problems. But time is on his side, and I believe he is a player who would excite those fans.
“He’s more consistent, and he gives you a really good option at centre-back and right-back. He can play in a three at the back as well.
“If you’re giving me a choice between Godfrey and Gomez, I’m going for the latter every day of the week.”

Gomez, who is contracted until 2024 at Liverpool, has played just 15 times in all competitions this term.
Newcastle currently sit 14th in the Premier League – nine points above the drop zone.
