Newcastle United ‘working on’ a ‘big’ development that could ‘change everything’ – pundit
Newcastle United can secure European football this season thanks to the poor performances of their rivals.
That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Newcastle United moved up to fifth in the Premier League after beating Brentford 5-1 on Saturday (8 October), the Toon’s second impressive victory in as many games after they dispatched Fulham 4-1 last weekend (1 October).
However, they dropped to sixth after the following day’s round of games.
In a letter recognising one year since the Saudi-backed takeover of the club (7 October), Newcastle’s chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan reiterated the club’s desire to “challenge for trophies both domestically and in Europe”.
Wenham can see Newcastle playing European football next season.
“Newcastle are working on getting into Europe and that would be a big step for them, and it would hang everything in terms of their ability to develop,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“The work Eddie Howe has done, I have to praise it again because he is going such a good job there. It was the development with the players who weren’t doing very well.
“People forget that Howe lost a lot of key players at the start of last year. Wilson and Trippier were injured for the back end of last season.
“He reinvented Joelinton which is the obvious one. But most of the players, if not all of them, have improved to no end and there is a squad there that can maybe nick that seventh spot.
“I don’t see any reason they can’t do it when you look at how the teams who are usually up there have started.”

Newcastle’s last European campaign came during the 2012-13 season.
The Magpies are next in action against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday (16 October).
