'All of a sudden' - Matthias Jaissle 'thrown under the bus' at Newcastle
Newcastle United's board must take accountability for their current inconsistency despite pressure building on Matthias Jaissle.
The 38-year-old is facing scrutiny on his position after a run of just one win in his last five Premier League games, following a 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa last time out.
This follows a turbulent summer, which saw the Magpies lose a number of their star players, and there is now a feeling that those players have not been adequately replaced.
As a result, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle must look internally when looking for who to blame for their rocky start.
Jaissle will "inevitably" face pressure when results on the pitch aren't going his way, as any manager would, but the issues run deeper than just the team's performances.
After losing key players, a sudden change of manager, and their new signings struggling to hit the ground running, there is a feeling Jaissle has been dealt a tough hand.
Could Newcastle sack Matthias Jaissle?
Football Insider revealed on 18 October that Newcastle currently have no plans to part ways with Jaissle and are optimistic that he can turn their current poor form around.
There is an acceptance that it may take a while for Newcastle to hit their top level, and can afford to be inconsistent in their performances, with the manager set to be backed.
However, should their run of poor form in the Premier League continue, he could come under pressure from the board who should instead be considering their own role.
"It's always easy to point the finger at the manager when results aren't going right," Brown told Football Insider.
"It happens at clubs across the country, teams start losing games, and inevitably all of a sudden the board want to blame the manager and shift the blame onto him.
"Newcastle have had a difficult start to the season, but it's difficult to blame the manager, because the board have got to take accountability for their role in it.
"They lost some very important players in the summer and they didn't replace them properly, so immediately the team is weaker than it was last season.
"The players that they did brought in, while there are some exceptions, haven't exactly hit the ground running and aren't currently having much of an impact.
"You can say it's up to the manager to get the best out of his players, but when those players aren't up to standard, it's not quite that simple.
"I think the board have to take a look at themselves, at the things they got wrong, before they start pointing fingers at the manager and looking to throw him under the bus."
When could Jaissle's position come under threat?
Despite the blame for Newcastle's tough start being largely pointed at the board, there is a growing feeling Jaissle could soon face pressure over his position in the dugout.
As with any manager in the Premier League, an extended run without a win will raise doubts about his future, and there is now a risk of the fans losing patience.
Brown warned Football Insider on 20 October that Jaissle is at risk of losing the support of the Newcastle fans if he cannot turn St James' Park into a fortress.
The Magpies have endured a mixed start to the season under the new boss, with two twins, two draws and three defeats from their opening seven Premier League games.
After a 1-0 defeat at home against Aston Villa, there are concerns that failure to improve their home form could see the fans turn on Jaissle sooner than expected.
