Jacob Murphy is edging closer to Newcastle contract extension as latest data emerges

Jacob Murphy is surely on track to earn a new contract at Newcastle after his strong showing in their win over Hull City.

Murphy was key to Newcastle's 2-1 win over Hull on Saturday as they bounced back from a disappointing defeat at Leeds last week.

The 31-year-old has divided opinions among Magpies fans for a while now, but certainly proved that he still has the quality to make an impact in the Premier League.

Newcastle turned down two separate offers from Nottingham Forest for his services in the latter stages of the summer window, despite Murphy being out of contract in June 2027.

He could agree to extended terms at St James' Park this season, and did his chances of an offer no harm against the Tigers.

Murphy is clearly well-liked by Matthias Jaissle, and a few more strong showings like the one on Saturday will surely see him tied down for at least another season.

The 31-year-old winger is the Magpies' longest-serving player, but struggled for form throughout last season and could have left in the summer.

Many Newcastle fans were left in disbelief after reports claimed that Forest had seen an offer worth around £15million rejected for his services, especially given his contract situation.

Jaissle reportedly pushed for him to stay, and sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Murphy will be offered a contract extension if he impresses the Newcastle boss on the pitch this season.

He may have suffered a tough start to the campaign, yet looked like a different player as he helped fire Newcastle to a much-needed home win against Hull.

Murphy cleverly won a penalty on the stroke of half-time after being tripped by Sorba Thomas, although the spot kick was missed by Yoane Wissa.

His physical output could hardly be matched, as he sprinted the most of any player (1.7 miles), hit the top speed of any player (21.9mph) and covered the second-most ground of any player (7.2 miles).

The 31-year-old also won all five of his attempted ground duels, created one chance and won two fouls.

He was a real driving force behind the win, proving that he has a real part to play under Jaissle this season and could well earn a new deal very soon.

Jaissle's comments point to Murphy extension being likely

Murphy's game time has been boosted by Anthony Elanga's recent injury woes, and he is set to remain on the sidelines after the international break.

Jaissle was pushed to explain his thoughts on the right wing position in the Swede's absence and why Murphy remained at the club despite an offer being on the table last week.

He told reporters: "Jacob is an experienced player, he's played that role many, many times. So he's also intelligent, to know exactly what the gaffer is demanding from him, and from him on that position in particular. There are other options, but not too many at the moment.”

"He's a really important player for our squad, not only on the pitch, also off the pitch. A leader who also communicates well and knows what it means to be professional. So I really appreciate him.
