Joe Willock should agree deal soon after '£12m' Newcastle update - verdict

Joe Willock is set to leave Newcastle United on a free transfer next summer, as his current contract situation stands.

The 27-year-old has not put pen to paper since signing across the dotted line at St James' Park in 2021, when he joined from Arsenal.

Since then, he has racked up 175 appearances, with some of his seasons being heavily impacted by injuries. That appears to have changed.

He has made 41 and 39 appearances in his last two campaigns, and he's already become a key figure under new boss Matthias Jaissle.

In fact, Football Insider understands that if he continues to impress, Jaissle will give the green light for Newcastle to offer a contract extension.

This is an incredible U-turn after Willock nearly left for Besiktas in the summer, with the Black Eagles coming very close to signing the midfielder.

Besitkas remain interested in Joe Willock

The Turkish giants are not giving up on the player's signature, according to FotoMac, and his value has now fallen to €14million (£12m).

It is understood that Besitkas are planning to make another move for the 27-year-old in the January transfer window, but he's become far too valuable for Jaissle.

He already has three goals in seven appearances, including the opener against Hull City at the weekend, and is deserving of a new contract.

Even if the Magpies are ready to cash in on the midfielder, doing that in January would see them have to give him up for a reduced fee or lose him for nothing next summer.

At least if Willock signs a new deal, Newcastle can hold out for a much bigger price tag, which would certainly match his performances so far.

The 27-year-old has been incredibly mature about the situation, especially given how close he was to leaving St James' Park just a few weeks ago.

It would appear that Willock is ready to fight for his Newcastle future, and he's absolutely loving life under the new manager, with a new role as well.

"I am happy to still be here. It is a massive club and a club that has played a big part in my career," he said.

"I am really happy to still be wearing the badge and this shirt and giving my all. It is an important club for me. I am looking to push forward. We have big aspirations so hopefully we can reach those goals."
