Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy should not be in the starting eleven as they take on Coventry upon the return of club football.

Murphy remained at Newcastle over the summer window as Nottingham Forest saw two bids for his services rejected.

Matthias Jaissle has taken a liking to the 31-year-old's professionalism and attitude, handing him starts in their previous three fixtures before the international break.

Murphy is yet to repay his new manager's faith with any real output, as numerous attacking talents wait patiently for their chance from the bench.

His dismal stats in this campaign so far show why Jaissle should drop Murphy from his starting eleven as the Magpies travel to Coventry next Monday.

The 31-year-old is suffering from a clear drop-off in form, and his valuation has plunged as a result of his poor performances.

Jacob Murphy must come out of Newcastle side on Coventry return

Murphy will be keen to impress at the CBS Arena as he returns to the club for the first time since a successful loan spell in 2015-16.

The 31-year-old has come in for some criticism at Newcastle over the last 12 months, with fans annoyed that they rejected a big bid from Forest late on in the summer window.

He is yet to rediscover his previous form under Jaissle, with no goal contributions in seven appearances so far this season.

Murphy has only created 0.49 chances per 90 minutes in the PL up to now, leaving him in the 10th percentile compared to attacking midfielders and wingers in 2026-27.

He has also completed 0.99 successful dribbles (53rd percentile), made 3.46 line-breaking passes (22nd percentile) and taken 1.98 touches in the opposition box (10th percentile) per 90 so far.

Transfermarkt have recorded a 16.7 per cent valuation drop for the 31-year-old in their quarterly update, from £10.1million to £8.4m. This shows just how much he has struggled since the start of the campaign.

Murphy is consistently ranking among the worst-performing players in his position in the top-flight, so it makes little sense for Jaissle to stick by him against the Sky Blues.

Bazoumana Toure ready to explode vs Coventry

Toure is the prime candidate to take Murphy's spot in the side, with Anthony Elanga out injured, having joined Newcastle for £42m in the summer.

He is yet to start a competitive match for the Magpies, but has bagged twice in four games off the bench, with Jaissle clearly keen to bed him in slowly.

The 20-year-old earned a move to Tyneside after ranking highly for assists (0.35), chances created (1.74), successful crosses (1.51), successful dribbles (1.86) and touches in the opposition box (5.07) per 90 against Bundesliga wingers last season.

He even scored on international duty for the Ivory Coast last week, and certainly deserves his chances to shine over Murphy in the West Midlands.
