Stefan Borson rates chances of Amanda Staveley's Newcastle return in '£1.5bn' twist
Amanda Staveley returning to Newcastle United is "not impossible," but there will be plenty of hurdles to jump over.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that a consortium led by the 53-year-old would have to spend as much as £1.5billion.
Staveley stepped down from her co-owner role at St James' Park in 2024, having been a prominent figure in brokering PIF's takeover back in 2021.
She quickly became a much-loved figure in the North East, alongside husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi, and led Newcastle to their first trophy in 80 years.
Supporters were just as devastated as Staveley was when she made the decision to step away, and many feel that the club has gone downhill since that moment.
Having seen deals with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United fall through, there are now whispers of a potential return to St James' Park.
Amanda Staveley return to Newcastle 'not impossible'
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson doesn't want to rule out an emotional return for Staveley, but did explain just how difficult it would be.
"I don't think it's impossible, but it would need her to be working with a completely new set of financial backers," he said.
"They would then presumably need to be the new buyer of Newcastle, probably from the Saudis. That's going to at least £1.5billion, probably more.
"It's not a straightforward transaction, and she'd probably have to look at it and go, 'What am I getting more than I was getting first time around, when it cost us £300m'.
"And a lot of the value that has been added, she's been part of. She had quite a sweet deal on the way out.
"And she's probably going to be using somebody else's capital to be able to do the deal the second time around. So not impossible, but pretty unlikely."
Newcastle fans raise concerns over PIF's future
Several red flags have been raised over PIF's "appetite" to continue pushing funds into the club, not least by Borson back in August.
While some of the concerns were curbed by the announcement of the Magpies' new training complex at Woolsington Hall, they have not disappeared.
Bryan King told Football Insider that he expects PIF to "reassess" their investments, potentially suggesting a short future at St James' Park.
Staveley's return would likely be greeted very positively, but it might cost a lot more than the 53-year-old businesswoman expects to splash.
