Why international break is perfectly timed for Newcastle, Matthias Jaissle will be thrilled

Newcastle United face an anxious three-week wait before resuming their 2026-27 campaign against Coventry City.

After beating Hull City on Saturday, 19 September, many supporters would have wanted to continue that great form at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The international break had other ideas, though, and the Magpies now must wait until Monday, 12 October, to restart their Premier League season.

Frank Lampard's side will, undoubtedly, be going into that game with a lot of confidence after finally getting three points on the board against Nottingham Forest.

Jaissle's side have moved up to ninth in the table, while their upcoming opponents remain in the relegation zone, so three points should be easily attainable.

Newcastle were forced to work incredibly hard for the victory against Hull before the international break, though, with a very limited squad as well.

Newcastle United could welcome back several injury-hit stars

Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Nico Gonzalez, Amar Dedic, Dan Burn, Joelinton, Will Osula and Ewen Jaouen were all on the sidelines.

This saw Lewis Miley feature at right-back, Yoane Wissa drop back into a midfield role, and Sean Steur play as a lone centre-midfielder.

Despite the difficult circumstances, the Magpies came through it with victory at St James' Park, but Jaissle may not have those worries for the next game.

The long three-week break could mean that all of the aforementioned players could return from injury against Coventry.

Elanga might only miss one more game as well, which would be a huge bonus, given his start to the 2026-27 campaign, with two goals in five games.

Coventry City face injury crisis of their own

The Sky Blues are also without several key players, but the international break is unlikely to be enough time to fix that for Lampard.

Aurele Amenda, Josh Eccles, Luke Woolfenden, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Haji Wright and Milan van Ewijk are all likely to miss the clash.

Taiwo Awoniyi will also unavailable due to serving a three-match suspension after his red card against Brighton.

All of these factors would point towards another three points for the Magpies, suggesting that the international break isn't a complete nuisance after all.
