Newcastle will listen to big-money offer for star man in January – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle will have to consider big-money offers for their stars in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested it will be “difficult” for the Magpies to avoid big sales while the current Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are in place.

Speaking in a press conference earlier this month (6 December), Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted he “can’t guarantee” retaining all his key players in January.

He insisted the club are striving to remain on the right side of the spending rules.

The Magpies were forced to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson before the 30 June accounting deadline earlier this year to help them avoid a potential points deduction.

Top-flight clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over three years under PSR.

‘I’m afraid’ Newcastle could be forced to sell, says Wyness

When asked if Newcastle will be open to offers for their stars in January, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’m afraid they will have to consider it.

“It’s going to be difficult for Newcastle to avoid selling players because they haven’t been able to get that influx of capital in from Saudi.

“I’ve been saying for weeks that they should be doing more on the sponsorship side with clubs and companies in Saudi.

“But they haven’t done it and that means they aren’t able to replenish the coffers as much as they are needing to.”
