Newcastle turn focus on signing Brazilian flyer after bringing in Joselu - report

By Harvey Byrne

Newcastle will now focus on typing up a loan deal for young Chelsea full-back Kenedy after bringing in Joselu from Stoke on Wednesday, according to a report.

North east news outlet the Chronicle have detailed on their website that the Magpies are in ongoing talks over the Brazilian flyer and that their attentions are now firmly on sealing a deal for the 21-year-old.

The report from the Chronicle follows a claim from Goal that Chelsea are currently stalling a move for Kenedy due to manager Antonio Conte having concerns over his squad size.

The youngster was also included on the bench for the Premier League champions’ season opener against Burnley on Saturday.

However, the Chronicle report also states that Kenedy’s inclusion was largely down to politics as Conte attempted to demonstrate his lack of squad options after what he feels to be a disappointing summer window.

Kenedy has been a part of the London club for two years since joining from Fluminense in the summer of 2015 and still has three years remaining on his contract at Chelsea.

Football Insider verdict:

The signing of Kenedy could either be a success or a failure for Newcastle and it can very much be compared to the addition of Christian Atsu, who was made a permanent signing this summer. Like Atsu, Kenedy has had a failed loan move at another Premier League club in Watford, which saw him make just one appearance and while being on the books of Chelsea he has very rarely featured with just 22 outings in total. However, unlike Atsu, Kenedy does not have the cushion of playing in the Championship against a slightly lesser opposition and while the Brazilian can be considered good going forward he can also get caught out on his defensive responsibility.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies have also entered talks over signing this defender.
