Newcastle’s updated stance on Eddie Howe revealed amid sack whispers

Eddie Howe retains the backing of the Newcastle board despite their mixed start to the 2025-26 season.

The Magpies have had a turbulent start to their 2025-26 campaign which has seen fingers pointed at the former Bournemouth boss.

Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier exclusively told Football Insider that Howe has to turn around Newcastle’s poor away form with the club sitting 14th in the table.

The 3-1 defeat to Brentford on 9 November has raised further doubts over Newcastle’s over reliance on winning at home.

Howe with ‘plenty of credit in the bank’ but must sort out Newcastle’s troubles on their travels

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Toon are not losing faith with the manager despite an odd run of form in the Premier League.

The Magpies are still fighting in all competitions, with their EFL Cup and Champions League displays reflecting it is not all bad at St James’ Park.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “He still has full backing of the club’s owners despite a disappointing run of form in the Premier League.

“14th in the table, two points above the relegation drop zone. I don’t think anybody would have expected that at the start of the season, but it’s been their away form which has been the real achilles heel for Newcastle so far this season.

“He still has plenty of credit in the bank at Newcastle. He celebrated four years in charge last weekend [9 November] as well and to be fair, he’s done very well at Newcastle, putting him up there as one of the very best managers in recent times.

“Big factor here is there’s still lot to play for for Newcastle this season. They’re in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup hoping to retain that trophy and they’re performing well in the Champions League as well, looking well-placed to finish in the top eight.

“So, I think Eddie Howe, although the Premier League form has not been great, I still think he’s got the full backing of the board and he’ll be confident that he can turn things around.

“So, I’m sure Eddie Howe will be working hard during this international break to reset and he’ll be confident that he can get them back on track and no knee-jerk reactions or panic, just a Newcastle just yet.”

Newcastle monitoring Everton’s James Garner

If the club feel Howe is the right man, then they will need to back up their faith by injecting some money into the team in the January transfer window.

Sources told Football Insider that Newcastle are interested in signing Everton’s James Garner.

The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and, with no progress on a new deal, could see the Toffees cash in in January instead of letting him go as a free agent next summer.

The Magpies are keen to bolster their midfield, especially given the lack of depth in the middle of the park with one injury potentially disrupting ay rhythm on Tyneside.
