Next Liverpool manager: Big twist in Xabi Alonso pursuit from senior source

Liverpool manager target Xabi Alonso is settled and happy in Germany as he continues to take Bayer Leverkusen to new heights, sources have told Football Insider.

Alonso, 42, has been the top target for the Merseysiders since Jurgen Klopp announced his intention to quit Anfield in January.

Football Insider revealed on 28 January that the Leverkusen boss is the “number one choice” to succeed the legendary German in the Liverpool hot seat.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Alonso and his family are settled in Germany.

It is believed he is happy at Leverkusen and could even lead them out in the Champions League in the 2024-25 campaign.

Alonso is ‘settled’ in Germany – huge new twist in Liverpool manager race

Liverpool are doing their homework on several candidates but remain optimistic about landing their former midfielder this summer.

Alonso’s current contract at Leverkusen is set to run until June 2026 following his appointment in October 2022.

Football Insider revealed on 27 January that he has a clause inserted in his contract that would allow him to leave for any of his former clubs – Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Real Sociedad.

His Leverkusen side are top of the Bundesliga by eight points and are on course for a famous treble this term.

Alonso spent five years at Liverpool as a player, making 210 appearances while winning the FA Cup and Champions League.

But he is settled in Germany – where he spent the final three years of his playing career.

Liverpool won the League Cup on Sunday (25 February) and are top of the Premier League with 12 top-flight games left this term.

Klopp also has the opportunity to win the Europa League and FA Cup in his final months with the Reds.
