Next Liverpool manager: Gary O’Neil emerges as surprise contender – sources

Could Wolves boss Gary O’Neil replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager next season?

Former Liverpool coach Gary O’Neil has done a ‘fantastic’ job at Wolves and could be a shock contender to replace Jurgen Klopp after being considered for senior coaching roles at the club recently.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the £80million investment plan of Fosun Sports Group.

As revealed by Football Insider, Wolves are primed to avoid future FFP issues thanks to an imminent cash injection from their owners this season.

Fosun are looking to raise a minimum of £80million to invest in both their football and eSports portfolio, which will provide the club with more financial flexibility under Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Football Insider revealed last month that Wolves were ‘dangerously close’ to breaching financial rules and receiving a points deduction.

Intriguingly, O’Neil already has strong Liverpool connections. He was assistant manager of their Under-23s before leaving in February 2021 to take on a first-team coaching role at Bournemouth.

Sources say the 40-year-old remains “very highly rated” by senior Anfield figures and has also been considered for senior coaching roles at Liverpool’s first team over the past two years.

Maguire heaped praise on O’Neil for his success this season and suggested that the new cash injection could be used to expand Molineux.

Wolves have gone very quietly about their business this season,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

If Gary O’Neil was called ‘O’Neillio’ he would be linked with the managerial jobs at Liverpool and Barcelona.

He’s done a fantastic job this season.

There is certainly the opportunity at Wolves for the club to take advantage of that success and cement themselves as part of the Premier League hierarchy.

They will be looking at expanding the capacity of Molineux and their opportunities to raise revenue to become more competitive.

“This money injection from Fosun – if used appropriately – can certainly be part of that.
