Next Man United manager: Xavi Hernandez odds shorten after source’s reveal

Ruben Amorim remains the heavy favourite to take over at Old Trafford but Xavi Hernandez is well placed following Erik ten Hag’s sacking on Monday (October 28).

The Man United board decided they had finally seen enough after their 2-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham on Sunday and decided to pull the trigger on the 54-year-old’s time at the club.

Football Insider revealed (October 29) that while Amorim, 39, is the favourite to take the job, Man United CEO Omar Berrada has held talks with Xavi Hernandez, 44, in Spain.

SkyBet has the young Sporting manager as the clear favorite to take over at Old Trafford, with odds at 1/10 to become the next boss.

Interim manager and ex-striker Ruud van Nistelrooy isn’t too far behind on 3/1 as he prepares for their League Cup tie with Leicester City on Wednesday (October 30).

Former England boss Gareth Southgate is in third at 8/1 while former Barcelona boss Xavi follows closely behind at 10/1.

Thomas Frank has done remarkable things at Brentford since taking over in 2018 and has been tipped to get a big job sooner rather than later. However, that is unlikely to be at Man United, as his odds are at 12/1.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has even longer odds, placed as the sixth favourite at 16/1 to become the next permanent boss at Old Trafford.

Race to become next Man United manager heats up

With the 20-time Premier League champions languishing down in 14th with just 11 points from their opening nine games, the writing was on the wall for Ten Hag.

Having scored just eight goals in that time, Man United have the second-worst scoring record in the Premier League, with only Crystal Palace and Southampton both with six.

Should the appointment of a new manager drag on longer than expected, Van Nistelrooy will be thrown in at the deep end in his first Premier League game at the helm.

Man United face an in-form Chelsea side, high off an impressive 2-1 win over fellow top-four contenders Newcastle on Sunday (October 28).
