Rodgers must not risk Celtic mainstay in meaningless games, fringe player should be given chance

COMMENT

Celtic mainstay Kieran Tierney missed the Hoops’ 3-1 win over Hearts on Sunday with an injury, and with the Scottish Cup Final less than a fortnight away Brendan Rodgers should not consider risking him for the two league games the Hoops have left.

Indeed, the two meaningless league games should see Tierney’s left-back understudy Calvin Milller given a start, to see how he is progressing.

Losing Tierney for the cup final would be a catastrophe for the Hoops, who struggled to replace him when he was forced off with a broken nose in last year’s final against Aberdeen.

Callum McGregor filled in but almost gifted the Dons a goal, thankfully they didn’t take advantage.

McGregor filled in against Hearts at left-back once more, and it is a waste for the player, who is far more effective in his normal midfield role.

Miller deserves the chance to show that, if the worst comes to the worst, he can fill in for Tierney.

The fringe player, who used to be a striker until he was converted into a left-back, has made four appearances this season, and was on the bench at Tynecastle.

The break, albeit one enforced by an injury, could do Tierney good, as he has played an incredible 52 times for the Bhoys this season, and he is in need of a rest.

Whilst Tierney takes the next week off, it seems like the right time to bring Miller in, and if he does well it all bodes well for the Hoops left-back position going forward.
