‘No way…’ – Exclusive: Ex-striker reacts to newspaper’s big Newcastle takeover claim

Noel Whelan claims that there was “no way” PCP Capital Partners’ takeover bid for Newcastle United was not going to be successful.

The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that both Mike Ashley and the prospective new investors would never have entered into an agreement if they thought things could go wrong.

As reported by the Daily Star, the Amanda Staveley-fronted consortium will see their takeover bid finalised over the next seven days after weeks of scrutiny from Premier League officials.

Despite the proposed deal coming under heavy fire for Saudi Arabia’s involvement, Whelan insists he had no doubts it would be completed.

Whelan told Football Insider: “Look, they’ve got to make sure the takeover’s right and that it’s good for the Premier League and it’s done in the right way.

“There was no way that this deal was never going to go through, it just wasn’t. Mike Ashley’s a very shrewd businessman, he’d have done his checks beforehand, so would have the consortium from overseas.

“They wouldn’t have even entertained it if they thought there was going to be a problem. They’d have made sure everything and every box had been ticked by them so there’s nothing that can come back on them to stop the takeover from happening.

“It’s exciting, I can’t wait, I’m looking forward to it. I think Mike Ashley and the consortium wanted it done as quickly as possible so they can get their feet under the desk and get planning for next year. I’m sure the fans can’t wait for it to happen as well.”

Ashley has been in charge on Tyneside for 13 years, during which time the club have suffered two relegations.

There have also been a number of controversial decisions during the Sports Direct supremo’s time in charge, including the renaming of St James’ Park and the departure of popular manager Rafa Benitez.
