Norwich City Exclusive: Stuart Webber rejects offer as he plots new role

Norwich City and Huddersfield Town’s former recruitment chief Stuart Webber has rejected multiple offers from foreign clubs including CSKA Sofia, sources have told Football Insider.

Webber, who has been out of work since leaving his role as director of football at Norwich in November 2023, is understood to be keen to get back into football and has been considering his options at home and abroad.

The former Liverpool academy recruitment chief, who also previously worked at Wolves, Queens Park Rangers and Huddersfield, is highly regarded within football recruitment circles following his success in the various roles he has worked in at his former clubs.

Webber was head of football operations at Huddersfield Town, where he played a key role in their surprise promotion to the Premier League during the 2016-2017 season, with his eye for talent helping him bring in then little-known German coach David Wagner as well as unearthing a host of top players from foreign fields to transform the team.

Ex-Norwich City chief Stuart Webber eyeing new role

After being head-hunted by Norwich in April 2017 to become the club’s first-ever director of football, Webber was tasked with transforming the Canaries on and off the pitch.

The 40-year-old masterminded two promotions to the Premier League as Championship winners alongside his inspired choice of head coach Daniel Farke in 2019 and 2021.

In his six and a half years in charge of Norwich, Webber was instrumental in reviving the club’s fortunes and restructuring a club that had lost its way due to major financial issues.

During Webber’s tenure, Norwich broke their transfer record for selling players eight times, including the departures of James Maddison to Leicester City for £20million, Ben Godfrey to Everton for £25million and Emiliano Buendia to Aston Villa for an initial £33million.

His impact at Norwich is still keenly felt today, with this season’s Championship top scorer Borja Sainz having been signed on a free transfer in the summer transfer window of 2023.

Webber has helped lay the foundations for further success due to the club having a fully functioning academy, with 21 academy products making their first-team debut during his stewardship as well as an impressive new training centre, which is the envy of a number of clubs.
