‘Not flawless’ – BBC pundit highlights Tottenham weakness after win v Liverpool
By Aramide Oladipo
BBC pundit Martin Keown has highlighted Tottenham’s defence as a potential weakness after their performance against Liverpool on the weekend.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team produced a stunning display to beat the Reds 4-1 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon but goalkeeper and skipper Hugo Lloris was forced to make a string of fine saves especially in the second-half.
Tottenham have only conceded a total of six Premier League goals this season – only the two Manchester clubs boast a better defensive record than them.
Despite falling short of winning the league title, Spurs have had the best defence in the league for the last two seasons.
Expressing his thoughts on the BBC Sport website, former Arsenal man Keown was quick to criticise summer signing Serge Aurier for his defensive display against Liverpool.
“The Spurs defence, on the other hand, gives them a platform and has helped them to challenge for the title in the past two seasons,” he said.
“It is part of the reason they are third at the moment.
“They are not flawless – against Liverpool, Serge Aurier was second-best a lot of the time against Mohamed Salah down Tottenham’s left.”
Salah scored Liverpool’s only goal of the game and it can be argued that Aurier could have done a lot better to stop the attack.
The Ivory Coast international has experienced a mixed start to life in England after picking up a red card against West Ham United and needlessly conceding a penalty against Real Madrid last week.
However, Spurs have achieved two clean sheets with Aurier in the starting eleven and the defender has already contributed with one assist this season.
