‘Doesn’t come anywhere close’ – Kris Boyd attempts to rain on Celtic parade
Kilmarnock forward Kris Boyd has claimed that Celtic’s potential title party against Rangers on Sunday pales in comparison to the Gers’ title win at Celtic Park in 1999.
Boyd believes that the Gers win in 1999 was more impressive at it was away from home, whilst a Hoops triumph on Sunday would take place at Celtic Park.
“Come back and talk to me when Celtic clinch the title at Ibrox. When they win 3-0 to seal the title against Rangers away from home,” Boyd said, writing in his column in the Scottish Sun.
“Okay, I’m sure Celtic fans will enjoy it if they beat Gers at home to win the title on Sunday but let’s get it right.
“It still doesn’t come anywhere close to the day they watched Rangers win the championship at Parkhead in 1999.
“It just cannot be touched. The only way Celts can equal that is if they manage to win the league in Govan again.”
The Gers victory in 1999 was marred by crowd trouble, three red cards and referee Hugh Dallas being hit by a coin from the Hoops end.
The SPFL will be praying that there is no trouble at the game, which is set to be watched by audience of millions all over the world.
Football Insider verdict
The chances of Hoops fans taking any notice of what Boyd thinks about them winning the title against their greatest rivals are slim and none. If the Bhoys win it will be a day of massive celebration for the Hoops fans, and one they will not forget any time soon. A first win to clinch the title against the Gers since 1979 will be a once in a generation party for Hoops fans, made all the sweeter by the fact that the SPFL were so desperate to ensure that the match didn’t go ahead as a title decider. It is bound to be a memorable occasion, and Hoops fans will be hoping that it ends in seven in a row being clinched.
