Nottingham Forest have two weeks to land £20m – Stefan Borson

Nottingham Forest must make £20million of profit from player sales before the end of the month to avoid a points deduction.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Forest needed to raise £65million over the 2023-24 season.

Forest are understood to be at risk of breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules for a consecutive season after facing a four-point deduction last season.

As revealed by Football Insider, Forest have cut £15million from their wage bill by releasing players this summer.

They face having to sell players before the deadline of June 30th to ensure their 2023-24 accounts do not breach the allowed losses of £105million.

Borson explained that Forest needed to raise £65million in total but the sale of Brennan Johnson last summer has reduced that figure to around £20million.

Nottingham Forest must make £20m profit in two weeks

Based on my calculations I had Nottingham Forest needing £60-£65million of player trading profit over the season,” Borson told Football Insider.

Clearly they did a big chunk of that on day one with the sale of Brennan Johnson for £47.5million.

They also did a deal with Mangala in January so we know they got some money there.

So £20million might be the right number but it is definitely profit they need rather than just sales.

Player sales can sometimes mean nothing because a player can make zero profit and be irrelevant to PSR.

It is certainly possible but not that easy to achieve given that we’re on the 14th of June and loads of players are out at the Euros.”
