Finance guru lambasts Nottingham Forest chiefs after £5m blunder – ‘bad decision’

Nottingham Forest should have taken £5million for their shirt sponsorship rights when they had the chance.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Premier League new boys’ failure to sign a front-of-shirt deal.

Forest were sponsored by BOXT during 2021-22, but that deal finished at the end of their promotion-winning campaign.

The Daily Mail reported that Forest rejected several offers of £5m per year, which analysts suggest is a good price for a newly-promoted side.

It is understood that the club believed it could get at least £10m, which represents one of the biggest shirt deals outside the so-called Big Six.

It was a “bad decision”, insists Plumley.

“Hindsight’s a wonderful thing but I also think £5m would have been good value for a Premier League club,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

This was always a risk and it looks like a bad decision.

On-pitch performance was always going to be key to this as well. It’s harder to sell to a sponsor if you’re bottom of the league.

“If you’re signing a deal with them, you have to be aware of the implications of where they might be in the future in terms of the pyramid.

“The risk hasn’t paid off yet and I think £5m was a good offer. It’s usually only a one-year deal and the further down the track you get the more the price reduces.
