Now or never for senior figure: Three things we learned about Rangers from win v Motherwell

By Amir Mir

Football Insider analyses the three talking points after Rangers beat Motherwell 2-1 in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.

Now or never for Mark Warburton

The Gers produced a late display against Motherwell to progress through to the next round of the Scottish Cup. After missing a number of good opportunities in the first half, Kenny Miller was on hand when his side needed him most as his two goals helped Mark Warburton’s side clinch a much-needed win. However, it is now or never for the club’s senior figure, Warburton, who must deliver the goods in this cup competition. The Ibrox club are miles off Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and they lost out to Brendan Rodgers side in the Scottish League cup. If Warburton fails to produce a trophy in this competition, then his time at the Glasgow giants may well be up.

Josh Windass needs to start more

The 23-year-old changed the game when he came on for Warburton’s side in the second half. Windass produced a brilliant cross for Kenny Miller as he equalised after Louis Moult’s opening goal. The youngster should be given more starts under Warburton as he provides that extra bite in midfield. Rangers failed to pass the ball quick enough during the first half but Windass changed that when he came on.

Jon Toral needs more time to prove his worth

The new signing didn’t light up the game, nor did he impress the Gers faithful with his standout performance. Instead, he looked neat and tidy and could have done more to put a stamp on the game. Considering it is the young midfielder’s debut, he should be given time to show what he can do in a Rangers shirt. The more game time he gets under his belt, the more Toral will add the much-needed attacking bite Warburton’s side require in the final third. A simple debut but not inspiring.
