Exclusive: McNamara destroys Celtic senior player who couldn’t cope v Rangers
Jackie McNamara slammed Celtic midfielder Lewis Morgan for his performance against Rangers on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Parkhead hero stated that despite Morgan working hard, he was physically out of his depth and couldn’t cope in the Scottish League Cup final.
Celtic beat Steven Gerrard’s side 1-0 on Sunday with Morgan playing 59 minutes of the game as a centre-forward before being benched.
McNamara believes Morgan would have been frustrated with his display but did admit that the odds were stacked against the 23-year-old succeeding as he was being played out of position.
When asked about Morgan’s struggles against Rangers, McNamara told Football Insider: “Morgan worked really hard but physically he was nowhere near being able to compete with the Rangers defence.
“Yeah (would he have been frustrated with his display), but it was a big ask as that’s not his normal position.
“It’s not his normal position with his back to goal and he was having no luck getting around Rangers’ defenders.”
Morgan has played 17 times across all competitions for the Hoops this season and has racked up two goals as well as three assists in the process.
However, the left-sided midfielder has struggled to get game time in the league this season as he has played only 246 minutes of league action across his five outings.
In his 2018/19 campaign, Morgan was loaned out to League One club Sunderland and he made 22 appearances across all competitions for the English giant.
In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that a Hoops player’s value has rocketed to £25m+ and a Premier League transfer is expected in 2020.
