Numbers dictate Celtic unlikely to swoop for replacement for departed powerhouse

COMMENT

At this moment in time, Celtic seem unlikely to sign a replacement for departed centre-back Erik Sviatchenko.

The 26-year-old powerhouse returned to Denmark to rejoin FC Midtjylland in a deal worth £1million, as reported by the Daily Record.

Whilst normally a replacement would be sought after for any departing player, that doesn’t seem to be the case with the Dane.

The Hoops have too many players at the club at this moment in time who can play centre-back to even consider bringing in a replacement for Sviatchenko.

As well as the current first choice pairing of Dedryck Boyata and Kristoffer Ajer, there is Jozo Simunovic, Jack Hendry and even Mikael Lustig and Nir Bitton.

Perhaps if another one or two centre-backs depart in the transfer window – Simunovic or Boyata, for example – then the Hoops would swoop for a new signing in that position.

Brendan Rodgers has more pressing concerns in his squad to deal with, such as getting the deal done to bring Odsonne Edouard to the club on a permanent basis, rather than looking for another centre-back.

Circumstances will always dictate what players come and go from a club, and Sviatchenko hadn’t been a Hoops player since January and rarely featured at all before that.

The confirmation of his departure doesn’t mean that a replacement is needed though, and Rodgers will get on with other transfer business before he looks at the centre-back position.
