Odds slashed for Michael Carrick to quit Man United and join Premier League rivals

Michael Carrick’s odds of being named Tottenham manager this summer have been slashed by one major bookmaker.

The Man United interim manager may well be involved in the conversation at several Premier League clubs this summer, amid a strong return to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in five games and have beaten the likes of Man City and Arsenal since appointing Carrick as an interim manager to replace Ruben Amorim.

Tottenham sacked Thomas Frank earlier this week and are expected to confirm the interim appointment of former Juventus boss Igor Tudor.

Decision-makers are thought to favour the permanent return of former manager Mauricio Pochettino after the World Cup this year, but Carrick is emerging as a potential candidate.

Tudor’s primary objective as the Tottenham interim manager will be to keep the Lilywhites clear of the relegation zone.

The North London club are just five points above West Ham and the drop amid a staggeringly bad league season under Frank.

The Dane was finally dismissed on Wednesday after Tottenham had lost yet again at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, to Newcastle United.

But there is no permanent option included in Tudor’s contract, with the Croatian’s unattractive recent record likely to lead decision-makers to look elsewhere in the summer.

Pochettino leads the race in the bookies’ eyes at 6/4, while the recently available Roberto De Zerbi and Robbie Keane also feature prominently in the race.

What Carrick has said about Man United job

Should Man United decide against appointing Carrick permanently in the summer, there could be a number of Premier League clubs interested.

Frank’s dismissal has left a vacancy at Tottenham, but there could easily be several more opening up in the coming months.

Newcastle United, Brighton, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace could all be searching for new figureheads amid issues with their own managers.

Speaking about the Man United job last week, Carrick said: “It’s not going to change what I do, or how I feel about it. I think I’m fully aware of the role I’m doing here and the responsibility I’ve got.

“We want to be successful. I want the club to be successful beyond the end of the season. If that’s me, if that’s somebody else at this stage, I can’t control that and we’ll see what happens.”

The 44-year-old is expected to stay in the Premier League in some capacity, even if that comes away from Old Trafford.
