Odds slashed: Julian Nagelsmann in running to be the next Man United manager after Michael Carrick latest

Julian Nagelsmann’s odds of being named the next Man United manager have been slashed in recent days, although Michael Carrick is still the firm favourite.

The Germany manager could well return to club management after this summer’s World Cup, and will be under discussion at several clubs.

Man United will be among them, with decision-makers not willing to make a commitment until the end of the season.

Carrick is the overwhelming favourite for the job, after leading the Red Devils to five Premier League games unbeaten since his interim appointment.

The former midfielder replaced the sacked Ruben Amorim in January, and won games against Man City and Arsenal to begin his tenure.

Julian Nagelsmann in race for Man United job

Nagelsmann was named Germany manager in 2023, following his dismissal from Bayern Munich earlier in the year.

The 38-year-old is unique in the sense that he had a very short playing career, hanging up his boots at the age of 20 after suffering several serious injuries.

The German began coaching in 2008, and was handed his first senior management role at Hoffenheim in 2016.

Strong stints there, and later with RB Leipzig, saw him named Bayern Munich boss in 2021 and he would lead them to the Bundesliga title and the Champions League quarter-final in his only full season.

Nagelsmann was unexpectedly sacked in 2023, with it later emerging that he had struggled to get hold of the big personalities in the dressing room.

No such problem has existed with Germany, however, with the 38-year-old’s team expected to have a strong World Cup campaign after being knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the 2024 Euro by eventual winners Spain.

And the German could be ready to return to club management after the tournament, with his odds of taking over Man United slashed to 12/1 by one major bookmaker.

Carrick remains the strong favourite at 8/11, while Oliver Glasner (8/1) and Roberto De Zerbi (6/1) also feature.

What Nagelsmann has said about managing in the Premier League

Nagelsmann’s high-pressing style would be a great fit for the Premier League, and the German has featured prominently in discussions about several vacant jobs over many years.

He appeared to be a strong contender for the Chelsea job in 2023, but ultimately pulled out of the process.

“The Premier League interests me as do other clubs in the Bundesliga and La Liga, but I have to improve my Spanish first,” he told the Independent in 2020.

He added: “In the Premier League, there is no time slot for anything else. Football, football, football. But there are a few clubs that I watch closely and the Premier League is a goal for every manager.”
